Claire and Kady and Jr. are fed up with the way Michael has been treating them while Jay has been away ("You've been a dictator," Claire tells him), so they concoct a fantasy about "the perfect dad."

Wanda goes away on a business trip, leaving Bernie in charge of the kids. Bryan (Anthony Anderson) wants to share the load, but Bernie doesn't think he can handle it. Bernie's in for a surprise.
